Match v East Riding - Sunday 4th August, 2019 Halifax,Huddersfield 28 - 8 East Riding Huddersfield played host to the 5th match in the 7 match league season as third place Halifax, Huddersfield and District Union of Golf Clubs (HHDUGC) took on leaders East Riding. East Riding attending without their strongest team but including the Yorkshire Team Champion players from Hornsea. Foursomes set, which pitches East Riding’s oldest and youngest players (Phil Scott and Luke Thornton) with HHDUGC ‘S oldest and youngest, Ben Walker receiving his senior team debut around his home course, Greaves collecting his 49th appearance. The foursomes are hard fought and although it finished 12 – 0, the boys won the last hole three times they played it which was fantastic. During the morning Josh McAspurn holing the 2nd shot into the 470 yard 9th from 127 yards. At lunchtime the 12 – 0 is being discussed, is it a first, has it been done before, I can’t remember, many suggest. Greaves the man with the stats, “happened 2 years ago when we did the same to York” “Of course it helps when a majority of the team come from the home club... I plan for that!” As normal in the singles Josh Morton leads us off as always, reliable, winning, Tom Hunt playing American scholarship student Matty Raybould loses the last to an eagle to halve his game. Aaron Schnacke beats the Yorkshire Boys Captain and Yorkshire player Jack Maxey. Scot Minto loses 1 down to Tom Broadley who finishes 2, 3, James Edwards coming unstuck against the experienced Andy Lockwood and Josh McAspurn losing to Nick Raybould who is in a rich vein of form, who equalled the course record at Hornsea the previous week. Ben and Adam Walker being well up and winning their matches 6 and 5, Greaves tired but not wanting to lose, 3 down 6 to play “I can’t let the boys down”, birdies the last to win 1 up. Former Huddersfield player and double Union Match play Champion Chris Lander returning a victory along with anchor man James Skirrow who wins 6 and 5 after his 4 year absence from the team. Last men on the course Graham McLean against Andy Woodhead (East Riding Team Manager) sharing the points as gentlemen often do!
